Maintaining proper lane discipline is an essential part of safe driving. It ensures smooth traffic flow, prevents unnecessary accidents, and shows courtesy to other road users.

Rules for Staying in Your Lane

1. Keep to Your Lane

Always remain in the lane in which you are currently driving, unless you need to turn, overtake, or avoid an obstruction.

Drifting between lanes creates confusion and danger for other drivers.

2. Avoid Frequent Lane-Switching

Do not change lanes unnecessarily or weave between vehicles.

Constant lane changing increases the risk of collisions and slows down overall traffic flow.

3. Change Lanes Only When Safe

Only move into another lane after checking your mirrors and blind spots.

Make sure there is sufficient space ahead and behind in the lane you want to enter.

Never force another driver to brake suddenly to let you in.

4. Always Signal Your Intention

Use your indicator lights well in advance before moving to another lane.

Keep the signal on until you have safely completed the maneuver.

Clear signaling allows other drivers to anticipate your actions and adjust accordingly.

A dual road (also called a dual carriageway) is a road that has been divided into two separate roadways for traffic moving in opposite directions. The separation may be done by:

a physical barrier (e.g., concrete wall or guardrail),

an open space (such as a grass island), or

a painted or paved separating strip.

The purpose of this separation is to improve safety and traffic flow by reducing the chances of head-on collisions.

Rules for Driving on Dual Roads

1. Keep Lane

Always drive in the left-hand lane, except when overtaking or if road signs indicate otherwise.

The right-hand lane should only be used for overtaking or preparing for a right turn (if allowed).

2. Do Not Cross the Divider

Never drive across the separating strip, open space, or barrier to get to the other side of the road.

Crossing over is illegal and extremely dangerous, as it may put you directly in the path of oncoming traffic.

3. Use Designated Openings Only

If you need to change direction or turn into the opposite roadway, use the officially marked turning points, intersections, or U-turn bays..

Do not make illegal or unsafe U-turns across the separation.

Keeping a safe following distance is one of the most important rules for preventing collisions. It ensures you have enough space and time to react if the vehicle in front of you suddenly slows down or stops.

General Rule
1. Maintain a Safe Gap
Always keep a sufficient distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you.

This gap must allow you to bring your car to a complete stop if the vehicle in front brakes suddenly.

2. Dependence on Speed
The faster you travel, the greater your stopping distance will be.

At high speeds, your reaction time and braking distance both increase, so the gap must be larger.

3. The 2-Second Rule
A safe following distance is measured by keeping a minimum of 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.

To apply this rule: Pick a fixed point on the road (e.g., a tree, signpost, or lamp post).

When the vehicle ahead passes it, count: “one thousand and one, one thousand and two”.

If you reach the point before finishing the count, you are following too closely.

4. Alternative Guide
In addition to the 2-second rule, you may also use the “three car-lengths” rule at lower speeds.

However, the time-based 2-second rule is more reliable, especially at higher speeds.
