A learner’s licence is a permit that proves that you have basic knowledge of a motor
vehicle and the rules of the road. The learner’s licence is valid for 24 months and cannot
be extended.
1. Go to the nearest driving licensing testing centre to book a test date and confirm the
booking.
2. Take the following with you:
2.1 An identity document (ID)
2.2 Two identical black-and-white ID photographs (before you have photographs
taken first confirm with the driving licensing testing centre how many photos they
require)
2.3 A booking fee (contact your Local Licensing Office for cost Structure ).
3. Complete the Application for learner’s licence form (LL1), which is available at the
driving licensing testing centre. If you are 65 years or older,
You must also complete a Medical certificate form (MC), which is also available at the
driving licensing testing centre .
4. You must go for an eye test at the testing centre or you can have an eye test
performed by a qualified optometrist and submit the results at the testing centre.
5. On the day of the test you must submit the following:
5.1 the booking receipt.
5.2 your Identity Documnt.
6. If you pass the test you must pay the Learner Licence issue fee.
7. The learner's licence is issued on the same day if you passed and paid the relevant fee.
1. A South African Identity book.
2. A temporary South African Identity certificate .
3. A South African passport issued to a South African citizen
Code 1:
Any motorcycle
• Motorcycle up to 125cc - 16 years old.
• Motorcycle above 125cc - 18 years old.
Code 2:
Light motor vehicle
• Light motor vehicle - 17 years old.
Code 3:
Any other motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicle -18 years old.
This is for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3 500kg

The examination is a multiple question exam. There are 3 sections:
1. Traffic Signs and Signals / Road Markings,
2. Rules of the Road,
3. Controls for Vehicles.
Sections 1 and 2 have 30 questions each.
Section 3 has 8 questions. You need to pass each section in order to pass the whole examination.
If you pass 2 of the 3 sections, but fail 1 section , you will NOT pass your examination.
You need to pass all 3 sections.
The number of questions you need to get right for each section are as follows:
Traffic Signs, Signals / Road Markings: (77%) 23/30
Rules of the Road: (74%) 22/30 (74%)
Controls for Vehicles: (75%) 6/8 (75%)
Code 1:
This is for a motor cycle with or without a sidecar, motor tricycle or quadrucycle. You must be 16 years or older on the date of the test in order to apply if the motorcycle’s engine does not exceed 125 cc and 17 years or older if it exceeds 125 cc.
Code 2:
This is for a motor vehicle, including a minibus, bus or goods vehicle, with a gross vehicle mass not exceeding 3 500kg. You must be 17 years or older on the date of the test in order to apply.
Code 3:
This is for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3 500kg. You must be 18 years or older on the date of the test in order to apply. You need to have a valid ID document. You need to pass an Eye Test.(before you have photographs
You will receive it immediately after you have passed, for an additional fee of between R37 and R126, depending on what province you are in.
Your best option for determining the cost of your licencing fee is to contact your local driving licence testing cetre.
Another option is to contact a local driving school or instructor who deals with your local driving licence testing centre - they will generally be aware of what the current costs are.
They are subject to change without notice though, so you may always want to bring a little bit of extra money with you just in case.
As of 2010, your licence will be valid for 24 months (2 years) from date of issue.
After that, it will expire, and if you wish to persue a Driver's Licence, you will need to reapply and rewrite the Learner's Test.
You cannot apply for someone else. You can only apply for yourself.
You cannot apply for a licence if you have a licence that was suspended or cancelled by a court of law and the period for the suspension has not yet ended.
If you have any illness or disease or disability, that would endanger yourself and others if you were driving. eg: severe mental illness, blindness or really poor vision, uncontrollable epilepsy, common dizzy spells or frequent fainting.
You will also not be granted a licence if you suffer any muscular co-ordination or Diabetes Mellitus or if you are an addict to mind altering substances.
Having a hearing problems or being deaf, is NOT regarded as a problem or a driving limitation.
You should get your driver's licence!
Once you have your Learner's Licence, be sure to stick the giant red letter “L” in the bottom left hand corner of the rear window of the car you will be driving in.
We suggest you go for lessons at a reputable driving school with a professional driving instructor, or ask your parents or someone with many years of driving experience to teach you.
Be aware that while your parents may know how to drive, they may not be aware of the specific K53 style of driving.
This service is to provide convenience to the public to save time and effort so that an applicant can pre-book a time slot when applying for one of the online services before going to their nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre.
This service is for any member of the South African public with a valid South African identity document who would like to make a pre-booking for one of the online services.
You can access the service at https://online.natis.gov.za which will have a list of all Gauteng DLTC's only.
The RTMC will pilot the solution in Gauteng and further provinces will be commissioned after consultation with the relevant stakeholders.
Currently you can book at any of the registered DTLC sites in Gauteng.
You can only make a pre-booking once for the same licence test.
You are not allowed to make the same test application at different testing stations.
We will be offering online payment in the near future.
Currently, the system does not allow for online payments therefore, you must pay for your booking at the testing station where the pre-booking was made.

The payment must be made within 3 days from making the pre-booking.
This is to prevent the slot from being forfeited and allocated to another applicant as it is only a reservation of your booking until it is paid within the prescribed period to make the booking confirmed.

You can do the eye test on the day of the payment at the DLTC or go to a recognised eye specialist where a certificate will be issued that will be accepted at the testing station.
If the date and time that you prefer is not available, it could be that it has been already allocated as the system is live or, the testing station is fully booked for the date and time you preferred.
You can either wait until booking timeslots become available or try a different testing station.
You can either try for a date and time at a different testing station that is more convenient or, select a different date and time as all testing stations have specific days on which they test certain licence categories and it could be that the times are already allocated.
You may use an alternative form of accepted identification like a certified copy of your I.D provided that it is under 3 months old, a valid passport or your current driver's licence.
