PassHitch Hiking Prohibited
Where: Displayed on any public road where it is necessary to prohibit pedestrians from soliciting lifts from passing vehicles. This sign is commonly found on highways, freeways, and major routes where it is unsafe for pedestrians to stand or for vehicles to stop.
Purpose: To prohibit pedestrians from hitch hiking (requesting or signalling for a lift) and to prevent drivers from stopping to pick up passengers in areas where it could endanger road users or disrupt the flow of traffic.
- No soliciting — pedestrians may not attempt to stop or solicit a ride from passing vehicles.
- 500m no-stop zone — drivers are not allowed to stop and pick up passengers within the next 500 metres after the sign.
- Shared responsibility — both pedestrians and motorists must comply to ensure road safety and smooth traffic movement.
